ENTANGLED STATES
Entangled States is a concertino for multi-percussion soloist and percussion trio. Using the concepts of quantum entanglement, the materials of music and various percussion instruments, Entangled States is a study in the nature of interaction. Each percussionist has instruments of a single family (metal, wood, or membrane), while the soloist has a mix of them all, and then some.

FANTASIE IN A FOR MARIMBA
Fantasie in A is a marimba solo inspired by the M.C. Escher drawing Metamorphosis II. It is the metamorphosis of one musical idea into a series of other musical ideas, connected in much the same way elements of the Escher drawing are connected. One idea slowly changes into another, becomes a different part of another, or pivots around a single note, eventually leading us back to the beginning material.

QUARTET NO. 1 IN F
Drawing inspiration from the masterful string quartets of Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert, Dwayne Rice has crafted a masterwork of his own for marimba quartet that is equal parts engaging, virtuosic, and idiomatic.

SEPTET
Commissioned by the Lone Star Wind Orchestra (LSWO) Percussion Ensemble, Septet is an advanced, college level percussion ensemble for seven players. Any live performance by a group of people, whether it is music, dance, or theatre, is essentially a conversation between all those involved. In this case, it is a conversation between seven percussionists, each with his or her own culturally unique set up.

VARIATIONS FOR SOLO FOR MARIMBA
Variations for Marimba (2005) is for the advanced marimba soloist. It is essentially a “classical” set of variations on a theme, however, the “theme” is elusive and evolves as the variations progress. Based on the compositional techniques of Béla Bartók, it is a profound tribute to the Hungarian composer and his work.

WARP
Commissioned by the Auburn University Percussion Ensemble, Warp is for a large-scale percussion ensemble of 11 performers with an off-stage violin or flute. When I had the idea for the piece, I imagined it accompanying an animated short story describing the birth and death of the universe: from the Big Bang, to the formation of the sun, the planets, human beings, and eventually to a potential Big Crunch.
